      2. Medical application

      (1) Dental:

      At the beginning of the 20th century, a wall mounted three arm dental electric drill appeared, with a rotational speed of 4000 r/min, and some even reached a speed of 10,000 r/min. The three arm dental drill, which is still widely used, is its derivative.

      (2) Otology:

      Julius Lempert, the father of modern otology, took the lead in using electric drills to perform otological surgery in New York in 1938 to treat chronic ear diseases and reduce the incidence of facial nerve injury. But the electric drill at that time was difficult to control, and the noise was very loud. Modern electric and pneumatic drills greatly increase the rotating speed and strengthen the cutting ability. The use of fast cutting bits, diamond bits and flushing suction systems enables otologists to quickly complete accurate surgical anatomy and greatly shorten the operation time.

      3. Marine flexible electric drill

      A new type of offshore drilling equipment, which is mainly used for coring and sampling of seabed sediments to explore marine geology and minerals. First, it was successfully

      developed by the French Institute of Petroleum (IFP). It was initially used to drill 300 meters and 500 meters of holes on land. Later, it cooperated with the Soviet Union to drill oil wells up to 3000 meters deep. In 1965, the first offshore test was successful, and the drilling water depth reached 2500 meters. The ECSM offshore flexible rod coring electric drill is used to install the flexible rod, electric drill, coring pipe, drill bit and submersible pump on the same rack, lower them to the seabed with wire rope, and realize remote drilling by supplying power from the ship's surface through cables. It can drill to a depth of 100 meters in 500 meters and take out 3.5 inches of core. The machine weighs about 10 tons.
